Drexel University recently announced that it will offer free to an unlimited number of military veterans. You can be full or part time, and you can get getting your undergraduate, graduate, or even doctoral degree. And, best of all, this applies to both on campus and online programs.
It’s all part of Drexel’s participation in the new GI Bill’s Yellow Ribbon Program.
This is a partnership between the federal government and Drexel, and a part of this program, the University will match the government’s contribution to the cost of an education so that eligible veterans can attend Drexel with no out of pocket expenses.
Here’s how it works. The federal government will pay up to the highest in-state school tuition, with any remaining cost shared between the government and the University.
Doing this will offer eligible service persons a free education.
There are under institutions participating in the new program, but Drexel is different because they will have no cap on the number of veterans who may enroll. They are committing 2 million for this program, and it will allow veterans who meet government and University admissions requirements to receive a completely free education at all of the University’s schools and colleges including the Drexel University College of Medicine, Earle Mack School of Law, Drexel at Burlington County College and the Sacramento Center for Graduate Studies.
Here’s another cool thing about the new Yellow Ribbon Program. The government will pay each student’s costs directly to the University rather than requiring those veterans to request a reimbursement, which was what they had to do under the original GI Bill. And the program includes a new set of educational benefits such as monthly housing and textbook stipends.
According to Drexel: “We are proud to be able to give back to those who have sacrificed so much to serve their country,” Greenberg added.
Three Cheers for Drexel!!!
OK, so here’s the lowdown on who is eligible, per the Veteran’s Adminstration. You must have served an aggregate period of active duty after Sept. 10, 2001, of at least 36 months or were honorably discharged from active duty for a service-connected disability and served 30 continuous days after Sept. 10, 2001.

I got my hair cut the other day, and I started a conversation with the girl, er lady that cut my hair.
Her name is Alicia, and she’s already figured out the online degree thing.
Alicia will be finishing up her undergraduate degree in Religous Studies, and then she’s going to get her Masters in Organizational management.
As soon as she mentioned her plans for a graduate degree, i asked her if she had ever considered getting a degree online.
“Oh, I’m definitely getting my masters online” she said without hesitation, “it’s the ONLY way to go…”
So I gave her an honorary membership into the online degree dorm room
Yea, my hairdresser knows for sure - online degrees have come of age. Especially when considering a graduate degree. I see ads and billboards all over touting one online graduate degree program after another.
And Alicia knows the score. She’s going to stay home with her growing family, keep working, and earn her masters in a short period of time. Then she’ll be off to the races.
Problem is, she probably won’t be cutting my hair after that - which is bad news for me

Let’s talk about volunteering.
Yeah, I know. When you think of volunteering, you probably think of canned food drives, nursing homes and home building.
But there’s a group of techies out there called Engineers Without Borders-USA and they’re pushing volunteering to a new heights.
They’re working on projects like improving drinking water and building irrigation systems
for crops, Engineers Without Borders-USA has student chapters based at universities
across the United States, and their mission is to implement engineering solutions and inspire new engineers in the process.
One group of students from the University of Colorado is designing and building a water
system for a village in Rwanda. Another group of students from the Colorado School of Mines worked alongside the villagers of San Pablo, Belize, to install solar panels and electrical wiring in a school, a church and other community buildings.
These guys and gals have coordinated humanitarian projects all over the world,
including Thailand, Mali, Senegal, Peru and Afghanistan.
ASME, which provided partial funding for the Belize project, has teamed up with
Engineers Without Borders to promote the involvement of ASME members and student members in future overseas projects.
So give this a thought and look this group up at your school.
