Associate Online Degree Programs | Another Success Story

Posted by bposton on November 30th, 2006 — Posted in associate online degree programs

Janet Ward is a 50-year-old single mother of three children who worked as a paralegal for several years before heading back to the classroom in a very non-traditional way.

She found Limestone College’s Internet Management degree program, and never looked back.

She works at the college’s Eastwood Library, maintaining its Web site during the day, and plans to graduate next month with a bachelor of science degree in computer science and Internet management with a concentration in Web development.

Then she’s off to get her master’s degree.

Here’s a quote from her:

“You know, I’m a single parent, and it’s wonderful to work at your own pace. There are so many benefits to online courses, and the way the program was developed, I’m more than comfortable going into the outside world with the knowledge I have.”

Ward said the coursework required her to develop and maintain a Web site from scratch, to set up computer hardware and to act as a system administrator.

The Virtual Campus for Limestone was created by Doug Hulsey in 1997 and continues to teach the Internet Management courses. The program offers five bachelor of science degrees, an associate of arts degree and 24 majors. Limestone offers new online courses every eight weeks.

The Virtual Campus program began with between 30 and 40 students, and now around 2,000 students take online courses through Limestone.

Way to go, Janet, and Limestone!

Engineering Online Degree | Are men the answer to the growing Nursing shortage?

Posted by bposton on November 12th, 2006 — Posted in engineering degree online

My last post talked about how there’s a growing shortage of nurses in the US and it could get pretty bad by 2020 with over 800,000 nursing positions not filled.

So hospitals, universities and nursing organizations are working to try and end the nursing shortage with help from industry and the private-sector.

One example is the Johnson & Johnson Campaign for Nursing’s Future.

This is a $30 Million public-awareness campaign and it’s goal is to enhance the image of the nursing profession, recruit new nurses and faculty and try to retain nurses currently in the profession.

Andrea Higham is the director of the campaign, and here’s what she had to say:

“Building awareness of the shortage of nurses and nurse faculty, as well as the benefits of a career in nursing, has had a big impact. But concerted efforts must continue if we’re to head off what is predicted to be a huge problem well into the next decade.”

Higham also said that men are a major target of this campaign.

She noted this interesting fact: If the number of men entering nursing each year grew to anywhere near the number of women entering the field, the nursing shortage would cease to exist.

So what’s a man to do but be a nurse?

Come on guys - you know you want to :-)

And you’d be helping the country out of jam, right?

OK, so will the growing number of men entering the nursing profession be enough to eliminate the
shortage in time? Don’t forget about all those baby boomers who’ll be in need of increased medical care.

No one can tell right now. All I know is that it’s up to us men to led the way

Engineering degree online - a success story

Posted by bposton on October 20th, 2006 — Posted in engineering degree online

I read about this the other day and thought you
might like to hear this success story of someone
who earned their online degree.

Actress Kristina Sisco of Ventura County, Calif.,
entered the online program at Thomas Edison State College
and completed a bachelor’s degree in psychology.

If you follow the soaps on TV, you may know the name.
Sisco received two Emmy Award nominations for her work on
“As the World Turns,”.

Although persuing acting, her passion is to be a professional writer.
Earning her degree gave her the chance to attend auditions, which,
she said, led to a role in the upcoming motion picture “The Flock,”
starring Richard Gere and Claire Danes.

Even better, she was awarded an Arnold Fletcher Award and induction
into the Alpha Sigma Lambda National Honor Society, and she has also
been accepted into the Master of Professional Writing degree program
at the University of Southern California.

So Kristina is well on her way to reaching her goal, and the degree she
got online was a great stepping stone.
