Just the other day I was blogging about the US Pell Grant and how it was being “beefed up” so to speak to help more students struggling to find the funds to finish college.
Well here is another avenue that you can consider. Grants offered by the institution itself.
Case in point. Ellis University, has announced what it calls an “Opportunity Grant Program” to make its degree programs more affordable to students across the globe.
The Opportunity Grant Program offers qualified students funding on a per credit basis, and is available to eligible new or continuing students for coursework that begins with the June 29th term.
The thing I like about this particular Grant program, is that it’s available for the student through the completion of his or her degree program. Of course, to remain eligible, the student must be and remain in good academic standing with the University.
Who is Ellis University?
Ellis University is an online university that offers certificates, undergraduate and master’s programs in a variety of disciplines. Based in Chicago, Illinois, they are regionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and they are a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The University is also nationally accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council.
For more information, visit www.ellis.edu or call (877) 355-4762.

Hey there my dorm room buddy
Hope you’re enjoying the summertime.
I thought I’d pass along some good news and bad news on the college education front.
Back in the 1960’s the college dropout rates were as low as one (1) in every five (5) students.
You DO remember the 60’s don’t you?
Well, this 1 out of 5 ratio got worse over the years, and stood at one (1) in every three (3) in the 1990s.
And it’s even worst today. Figures from the Department of Education for 2000 through 2008 show that 30% of student enrolled on schools leave in their first year and 50% never graduate.
Believe it or not, these numbers are expected to go even higher. Why?
The biggest reason is the lack of funds to finish college. Another is the fact that most who drop out of college think they can never go back since they (hopefully) have a full time job.
But here is the good news…
The advent of online degree programs are finally giving those who could not finish college a great opportunity to do so now. Sure it’s a struggle to hold down a job and go to school, but at least students can now fit online classes in their busy schedules.
As I hope I’ve pointed out time and time again, even though it is a challenge to study online it is a lot simpler to attend online classes than missing classes in traditional colleges. You can have a one-on-one interaction with your professor via emails and Instant Messaging. You can also attend lectures anywhere (and anytime) so long as you have an internet connection. And, most importantly, you can usually go at your own pace and time schedule.
Now, what about the lack of funds? Well there is good news here too. It appears that the US government is working on a to help in offering financial aid to the many students who qualify for the federal financial aid – i.e. the Pell Grant.
Last I heard, Congress will now allow up to a maximum of $5500 to those seeking their degree and who have insufficient funds to help with their college education.
To learn more about the Pell Grant check out the US Government website:

In today’s down job market, one way to make your resume stand out is to have an advanced degree.
But you have to realize that it’s now as easy as some schools make it sound.
While it is true that Online masters programs are often less expensive and more convenient than traditional degree programs there are several issues that you need to think about.
Regardless of how you earn your degree, remember that it’s not a ticket to six-figure paycheck or job security — consider the slew of MBA casualties on Wall Street in recent months. But if you think it will give your career a kick, here are a few points to keep in mind.
The first one is the fact that you have be self-motivated. This is a MUST.
An online degree program doesn’t force you to sit in a classroom and because of that you don’t always have social support group.
THe next one is picking the right school.
Many traditional universities also offer online courses. At some schools, such as Duke and Columbia universities, select masters programs are entirely online.
If you’re not set on getting a degree from a traditional institution, online-only schools can be viable options. For instance, the University of Phoenix offers master’s programs in business, education health care and psychology. Other career-focused schools, such as DeVry University, also offer masters programs online.
But be vary wary of any online school that promises a quick and easy time to get your sheepskin. They may ask for only a fraction of the total cost of a traditional degree in tuition and have names that echo those of prestigious universities. But when their mailing addresses is a P.O. box - run away - FAST
Always remember that the U.S. Department of Education maintains a database of accredited schools on its Web site (www.ope.ed.gov/accreditation) and you can also check the site of the Council for Higher Education Accreditation at www.chea.org.
Also, the admissions process for an online program at Duke or other traditional universities is the same as their on campus programs, while online-only schools have admissions that are typically on a rolling, monthly basis.
Another issue is your courses and cirriculum.
It you think that course work will be easier because it’s online - forget it, it won’t…
In fact, at traditional schools the online materials are usually the same or at least comparable to what’s taught in classrooms.
As with any degree related course, you’ll be expected to hand in periodic assignments - on time
So if you are more accustomed to the structure and disipline that a physical classroom provides, then meeting these deadlines with an online class might be a struggle.
Of course, the benefit to all of this is that you can study when and where you please.
Another beneft is the fact that you might actually interact with classmates and professors more with an online class than if you were in a lecture hall packed with hundreds of students. Chat rooms, frequent e-mail exchanges and online message boards are often integral elements of online courses.
Also be aware that for certain degrees, like those in the medical profession, you’ll likely need to complete some courses in person at some type of facility.
Another issue is cost - and with that - financial aid. Online degrees are typically cheaper than traditional programs, but tuition is still considerable.
At the University of Phoenix, for instance, tuition for full-time graduate students was $13,500 in 2007, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. At the American Intercontinental University Online, it was $21,300.
But that doesn’t mean you have to pay the full price. If you’re getting a paycheck that will limit how much federal aid you can qualify for, but by all means, still fill out the FSAFA application. Another (and often better) resource for aid might be your employer. Professional associations also offer scholarships and stipends, and don’t forget the instituion itself - there are a lot of universities and online-only schools that offer scholarships.
You really should not worry about how a potential employer will accept your degree from an online program, so long as it is accredited by the right institution, especially if it is comes from a traditional university.
But ultimately, the decision to get a master’s degree boils down to whether you think an advanced degree of any sort will boost your career.
Here’s something that might help in that decision: According to the Census Bureau, median earnings for people with a graduate or professional degree was $61,000 in 2007. That’s compared to $47,000 for people with just a bachelor’s degree.
If you are currently employed, make sure that one of the first things you do is to talk with your human resources department. Ask what new opportunities additional schooling could open up or how it could affect your pay.
And don’t forget that even if your currently employer doesn’t offer you more money or a better position because of your new degree, any edge you can get is worth considering in this job market.

WOW, talk about pain at the pump!
With the super high price of gas, and the fact that nobody can explain why it is so high, the country is coming to terms with the fact that these gas prices might just be here to stay.
While that is a scarry thought, at least it appears to be increasing demand for online degrees.
Cases in point:
Hodges University’s campuses have seen an online enrollment increase of nearly
150 percent.
At Florida Gulf Coast University, students taking at least one course online numbered 3,872 out of a total of 9,388 students last fall. In the spring, 4,312 students were enrolled online, or about 46 percent of the student body.
Edison College is looking at a 140 percent increase in students who take online classes.
Now, to be honest, no one has officially attributed this increase to the econony or high gas prices. In fact, some colleges point out that their marketing campaigns are the result. (yeah, right
)
But I think anyone with half a brain can tell that if you factor in the cost of gas for communting, and the other costs like parking, etc, the cost of online degree programs is become more and more reasonable. And the overall weakness in the economy is causing a lot more folks to consider upgrading their education.
But hey - that’s what I get for thinking

If your spouse is in the military, then first of all you have my deepest thanks for all that you do for them and our country.
In a very small way, I’d like to post this as a way of giving back to those who have given so much.
I recently learned that Kaplan University is giving a 10 percent tuition discount for military spouses. And also that President Bush has asked Congress to allow service members to transfer unused G.I. Bill education benefits to their spouses and children.
So if you have a dream of earning or finishing your degree, then here is an opportunity to do so.
Just so you know, Kaplan is a leading provider of online higher education. They offer more than 100 academic programs that can be completed from anywhere in the world. So now, no matter where the military tells you to go, you have the flexibility of earning a degree online that could help you move to a new career or improve your current career.
By the way, Kaplan also offers a 15 percent tuition discount to all active military personnel, which they’ve been doing for a while now. They even have a dedicated military admissions team that understands the issues that active duty military personnel and their families face every day.
The military spouse tuition discount will be available starting Wednesday, Jan. 30. If you’d like more information just call them at 866-889-4582.
And again, thanks so much for your sacrifice for our country!

OK, so you’ve finally realized and decided that this is the year you’re
gonna start (or finish) that degree - right?
And, you’ve also decided that you’ll be taking most (if not all) of your
classes online.
So welcome to the online dormroom, good buddy!
Now, for a little “tough love”
(”What? on my first day in the online degree dormroom?
)
There are a lot of online degree sites out there, and alot of wisdom on
what it takes to get your degree online. But I’d like to sum all of it up with just 5 questions…
Call it - the 5 hard questions to ask before you start your online education:
Numero Uno: Is the Online College or University you’re considering ACCREDITED?
Probably the most important question. You HAVE to look into accreditation.
Get your online degree from a non-accredited institution and you’re soon fine that
your degree is not recognized by some employers.
Or, almost as bad, that course you took will not transfer to another institutions.
Did you know that, unlike the practices of most other countries, the United States government does not ensure all online colleges are accredited?
So make absolutely sure you can answer YES to this question.
2. Can I transfer my credits?
Every online college and university has a different credit transfer policy.
So it’s very important if you’ve already earned some college credits understand the credit transfer policy before beginning an online program. Check with the institution to clarify any questions about transfer requirements, so you won’t be surprised later.
3. Do you know your Financial Aid options?
One of the most important things to consider with When researching an online college it is to look into the institution’s financial aid options. According to a 2003-04 report by the National Center for Education Statistics, 63 percent of all undergraduates receive some type of financial aid. Financial aid options include scholarships, work-study programs, grants, loans and loan-forgiveness programs.
So make sure you know how to “follow the money”
4. Are you the right kind of “learner” for an online degree program?
OK, this is tough one, because you have to be brutally honest with yourself.
Although an online education is the ideal way to learn for millions of people, it doesn’t fit everyone’s learning style.
So before you even apply for an online degree program make DARN SURE that online learning is conducive to your lifestyle. You have to think about your technology access and skills, your personal motivation and overall learning style and then decide if online learning is right for you.
5. Can you rely on your family and/or employer for support?
It’s a must that to do your best academically, you have to have the support of those closest to you. Talk this over with your family, because it WILL have an impact at home. It’s also important for you to make sure you have buy-in from the boss.
Or his boss
.
Make sure your employer and manager will support you when you take your lunch hour catching up on a paper or answering a discussion question for your class.
Getting an online degree is a decision that shouldn’t be taken lightly and one
that will have a tremendous impact on your life. If you do things right, that impact will be very positive, such as improving your career, confidence and salary.

OK, so here’s another reason why a goal of acheiving your degree online is a good one.
…It can help save the planet
No, it’s TRUE!
It turns out that choosing an online degree program is an incredibly easy way for
students to make an environmental impact.
That’s according to a new article from WorldWideLearn.com, the world’s premier online
education directory.
The article titled “Nine Ways to Save the World with Your College Degree” reveals
the environmental benefits associated with online education.
While there has not been much research done on this in the U.S. a number of
European organizations have already released studies that show the potential of the Internet
and other e-learning methods to radically reduce energy consumption and emissions.
At least that what the article says…
For example:
The Stockholm Environmental Institute and the UK’s Open University Design Innovation Group
found that, compared to traditional campus college courses, distance learning courses:
- Consumed nearly 90% less energy
- Produced 85% fewer CO2 emissions
These energy reductions included:
- A 92% reduction in travel-related environmental impact
- A nearly 50% reduction in paper and print consumption
So there you have it - get your degree online and help save the world!
