Online Degrees - do your HOMEWORK first

Posted by bposton on March 29th, 2009 — Posted in online degree programs psychology

I’m sure that you’ve heard recently that in this tough job market, you need every advantage you can get. One would be an advanced degree. And while many are considering getting this type of degree online, you need to do your homework.

Such as:
Chosing the school:
Today many traditional universities also offer online courses. At at lot of those schools, select master’s programs are entirely online.
You also have other options than traditional institutions, which are the online-only schools such as the University of Phoenix, which offers master’s programs in business, education health care and psychology - and DeVry University.

Just make sure you stay away from online outfits promising quick and easy degrees. These are the “schools” that ask for $1,000 or more in tuition, and have names that echo those of prestigious universities - but have P.O. boxes for their address.
Not a safe bet.
Make sure you check with the U.S. Department of Education Web site, www.ope.ed.gov/accreditation  to check the school out - throughly. You can also can check the site of the Council for Higher Education Accreditation at www.chea.org.

Make sure you keep up with the admissions standards for the school you’re interested in. You may not know it, but while traditional universities generally apply the same admissions standards and deadlines for online students as for everyone else, online-only schools, usually have a rolling admissions process.

Engineering Degree Onine | Need help learning the language?

Posted by bposton on November 13th, 2006 — Posted in engineering degree online

OUt here in the online degree dorm I see a lot of folks struggling with the foriegn language that they’re taking.

So this news story I came accross might be of benefit. Read on…

Did you know that alot of what we know about our native language is in the sub-conscious?

YOu know how when you want to express something, correct phrases and sentences just come to you? Well that’s how -most of this process is unconscious.
So Stephen Krashen, a professor at the University of Southern California and a linguistics expert, put together a hypothesis to explain how this is possible. And he used that, which is called Input Hypothesis to create what he calls a “natural approach” to learning a language.

Here’s how it works (I think…)

You read and listen to words and sentences - i.e. the “input” If you understand these sentences, they are stored in your brain. More specifically, they are stored in the part of your brain that is responsible for language.

For example, using this hypothesis, here’s how a child learns his or her native language. The child listens to his or her parents and other people. As the child’s brain collects these words and sentences, he or she gets better and better at producing sentences on his or her own. By age 5, the child can already speak quite fluently.

Got it?

So according to Krashen’s theory, the way to learn and improve is to feed your brain with a lot of “input” which are correct and understandable sentences, written or spoken.

Now some cognitive scientists say that watching movies is one of the most natural methods of improving your language skills at any age. Learning English by watching movies is an example of  “learning by input.”

So go get yourself some French language movies and go to town :-)

There’s a company that has taken this theory and put it into practice:

The company is called SFK Media Corp. SFK stands for Specially For Kids. They created a product called ReadEnt Reading Movies.

It used this technique with an innovative tool called “Action Captions.” As a child or adult watches the movie, each spoken word appears on the screen as text directly from the person’s mouth as it is spoken. ReadEnt’s Reading Movies are available as interactive DVD programs for use on the TV, computer, video-game console or portable DVD player.

engineering degree online : New - an Alternative Medicine Doctorate Online Degree Program

Posted by bposton on November 1st, 2006 — Posted in engineering degree online

I was googling through the internet the other night when I came upon a news release I thought you might find interesting.

It seems that there’s an online Doctorate program for Alternative Medicine that is just getting started over in the U.K.

It’s the very first Doctor of Science program of it’s kind, and it’s open to anyone in the traditional medicine field who wants to upgrade their current Qualifications in Alternative Medicine.

By anyone, the list is pretty long - physicians, Surgeons, Pharmacists, Dentists, Osteopaths, Chiropractors, Opticians, Wellness Consultants, Herbalists, Acupuncturists, Naturopaths, Healers, odiatrists, Chiropodists, Scientists, Healers,Therapists, Homeopaths, Chinese Medicine Practitioners and Nurses

It will require an intensive 12 - 36 month period of study, and while it’s primarly done online it will also require a few Residential Study Weekends at selected UK locations and all candidates will still be expected to make the usual Doctoral Presentation, backed up bye solid supporting case reports, of course.

Yep, is over in the UK, but hey, why let that stop you? :-)
